Mycelians

A bizarre melding of human and fungus, the Mycelians are a stoic, nature-loving race, ensconced in cities carved deep into hillsides and fiercely determined to repel the depredations of savage races like Wildmen and goblins. More than any other race, Mycelians have acquired a reputation as emotionless and dim forest folk, though this has more to do with their love of the various narcotic mushrooms and plants that grow in the world. It could be said that mycelian history shapes the disposition of many mycelians, for their love of easy living and recreational drugs is at odds with the ever-present dangers of life in the wild.

Physical Description

Suited to life in caverns and tunnels, Mycelians are rather short, about a foot shorter than most humans, with wide, dense bodies. Though some have hair atop their heads, most are completely hairless. All have visible lines of what looks like mycelium running just underneath the surface of their skin.

Society

The great distances between their forest refuges account for some of the cultural differences that exist within mycelian society, but on the whole there is a remarkable level of cohesion between even the farthest flung Mycelian societies. Despite these schisms, mycelians throughout the world are characterized by their love of earth and stonework, their passion for craftsmanship, a love of the natural growing wonders of the world, and a fierce hatred of giants, orcs, and goblinoids.

Relations

Mycelians and orcs have long dwelt in proximity, theirs a history of violence as old as both their races. Mycelians also generally distrust and shun Wildmen, and are suspicious of the Returned. It is with humans that mycelians share the strongest link, for humans’ curiosity and appetites for drugs come closest to matching those of the mycelian ideal.

Alignment and Religion

Mycelians are driven by tradition and a desire for leisure, and while they are often satirized as being aloof, they have a strong sense of friendship and justice, and those who win their trust understand that, while they play hard, they are remarkably industrious. Most mycelians are lawful good.

Adventurers

Although mycelian adventurers are rare compared to humans, they can be found in most regions of the world. Mycelians often leave the confines of their caverns to seek glory for their families, to find wealth with which to enrich the homes of their birth, or to reclaim fallen mycelian living grounds from racial enemies. Mycelian warfare is often characterized by tunnel fighting and melee combat, and as such most mycelians tend toward classes such as fighters and barbarians.

Mycelian Racial Traits

+2 Constitution, +2 Wisdom, –2 Charisma: Mycelians are both tough and wise, but also a bit unfamiliar with social graces.
Medium: Mycelians are Medium creatures and have no bonuses or penalties due to their size.
Slow and Steady: Myclieans have a base speed of 20 feet, but their speed is never modified by armor or encumbrance.
Darkvision: Mycelians can see in the dark up to 60 feet.
Defensive Training: Mycelians get a +4 dodge bonus to AC against monsters of the giant subtype.
Sharp Eyes: Mycelians receive a +2 racial bonus on Appraise skill checks made to determine the price of nonmagical goods that contain precious metals or gemstones.
Habit: Mycelians receive a +1 bonus on attack rolls against humanoid creatures of the orc and goblinoid subtypes due to special training against these hated foes.
Hardy: Mycelians receive a +2 racial bonus on saving throws against poison, spells, and spell-like abilities.
Stability: Mycelians receive a +4 racial bonus to their Combat Maneuver Defense when resisting a bull rush or trip attempt while standing on the ground.
Stonecunning: Mycelians receive a +2 bonus on Perception checks to potentially notice unusual stonework, such as traps and hidden doors located in stone walls or floors. They receive a check to notice such features whenever they pass within 10 feet of them, whether or not they are actively looking.
Weapon Familiarity: Mycelians are proficient with battleaxes, heavy picks, and warhammers, and treat any weapon with the word “mycelian” in its name as a martial weapon.
Languages: Mycelians begin play speaking Common and Mycelian. Mycelians with high Intelligence scores can choose from the following: Giant, Gnome, Goblin, Orc, Terran, and Undercommon.
